Penstemons are a very large and complex group that makes it difficult to separate the species except for the hairy penstemon which is easily distinguished by the downy nature of its stem.
"Hirsute," its common and scientific name, also refers to the fact that almost all parts of the plant are densely covered with small hairs.
A charming little bush with purple tubular flowers much sought after by hummingbirds. This is a very interesting species to add to a rock garden, adapting well to poor, rocky soils.
Hairy penstemon can be very effective as a companion plant in the garden as it is known to attract predators and beneficial pests and thus keep unwanted crops under better control.
The delicious nectar of this plant also attracts many bees in addition to being a host plant for the Baltimore butterfly (Euphydryas phaeton).
Hairy penstemon seeds must undergo cold stratification to ensure germination.
